The Committee to Protect Journalists said last night that forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had detained four further international journalists.

The four were detained on the outskirts of the city of Brega, the CPJ said, continuing the government's pattern of arbitrary detentions and other restrictions.

David Bailey in conversation with Andrew Graham-Dixon - Telegraph

’d been warned. David Bailey has a reputation as a “difficult” interviewee: touchy, hectoring, foul-mouthed, with an inveterate tendency to ignore questions and talk about whatever is at the forefront of his own mind instead. Foul-mouthed he was, but as for the rest he most certainly did not live up to stereotype.

Maybe we caught him on a good day but he was thoroughly charming, giving the impression of a man who has ceased to care what posterity might think of him – if he ever did care – and who is now sufficiently successful to pursue his own enthusiasms: creating sculptures, photographing the last bullfighters, doing charity work in Afghanistan.

BBC News - Drowning in pictures

At the BBC we can receive more than 8,000 pictures from the news wire agencies each day. Add to that the photographs sent in by our readers, pictures sent on spec from freelance photographers and independent photo agencies, then, well let's just say we see our fair share of pictures.

You could argue whether we really need any new photographs? Have we reached saturation point?

Magnum photographer publishes book on iPad

Capitolio is documentary photographer Christopher Anderson's cinematic journey through the upheavals of contemporary Caracas, Venezuela, in the tradition, he says, of such earlier projects as William Klein's New York and Robert Frank's The Americans. But instead of just publishing the work in book form, the Magnum photographer has also released it on the iPad and iPhone platforms for $4.99 (£2.99). He speaks to BJP...

Is photography art?

"Don't let's kid ourselves that the only good stuff is made in the name of art," said David Campany at The Social last night, in the first of two insightful talks on the relationship between photography and art

"What's the relationship between photography and art? It's a big, pompous question and there might have been a time when I'd have given a big, pompous response but I don't have a clue any more," said writer and academic David Campany at The Social last night. "I'll try to respond in the time I have in a very personal way."

Freed Times Journalists Give Account of Captivity

The Libyan government freed four New York Times journalists on Monday, six days after they were captured while covering the conflict between government and rebel forces in the eastern city of Ajdabiya. They were released into the custody of Turkish diplomats and crossed safely into Tunisia in the late afternoon, from where they provided a harrowing account of their captivity.

Eugene Smith Fund calling for entries

Eugene Smith's concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

Reuters photographer is killed in Iraq

Freelance photographer Sabah al-Bazee, who had been a contributor for Reuters, has been killed in Tikrit in Iraq.

Thirty-year-old Sabah al-Bazee "was among more than 50 people killed on Tuesday when gunmen attacked a local government building in Tikrit, the hometown of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein," Reuters reports.

"On behalf of the entire team at Thomson Reuters, I wish to convey our sadness at the untimely death of Sabah al-Bazee," says Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen Adler. "He was a valued member of our team in Iraq and will be much missed by colleagues. This tragic incident shows yet again the risks journalists face daily in doing their jobs and to bring news to the world. Our thoughts are with Sabah's family and friends."Al-Bazee has been a contributor for Reuters for the past seven years. He was also working as a cameraman. He "suffered shrapnel wounds in an explosion," according to Reuters.
